How to Spruce Up Your Home Before You Sell | Selling a House

Selling a home is not fun. Endless parades of strangers with unknown hygiene walking through your home. Getting kicked out of your home for hours on end. The panic attacks not knowing what people touched with their dirty fingers (ok maybe that is just me). There are some things you can do to put your homes best foot forward so it will sell quickly, and reduce the pain of open houses and showings.

If you have watched HGTV you know how many how many buyers are looking for a “Move In Ready” home. There are a few things you can do to freshen up your home:

  • Paint. I generally consider painting relaxing, but a lot of people do not want to take on that task. So putting a fresh coat on your walls can help make your home more appealing to buyers. Make sure you choose a light, neutral color (gray, beige, white). If there are dark color or bold colors in your home like red, dark brown, or black lightening them up can make a big difference.

  • Frame bathroom mirrors. builder installed bathroom mirrors are pretty ugly. Simply framing in the mirror can make a significant different on the bathroom. Check out our blog on framing bathroom mirrors to see where you can get a custom built frame.

  • Update Lighting. Do you have some really ugly or outdated light fixtures? You can purchase new lighting for pretty good prices through Joss and Main, Home Depot or Lowes. The cost of new lights isn’t too bad, but it will give your house a new lease on life that buyers are sure to recognize. Make sure your lights aren’t too extravagant, and they fit the style of your home so they will appeal to everyone.

  • Patch up old picture hook holes. Do this before you paint. Take some wood filler and patch up any holes in the walls.

  • Touch up the trim. If there are scuff marks on your molding, or it is in sad shape go over it with a paint brush or wood stain to match the existing trim.

  • Carpet. if your carpet is in rough shape replace it, it will be well worth the money. You can get some great deals on carpet and install through Empire Today, Lowes, or Home Depot.

  • Fix or replace anything broken or ugly. Nobody wants to buy a house in complete disrepair so take the time to replace broken cabinet doors, or dry rot.

  • Get rid of any mildew or unsightly stains.

  • Hard water stains in the toilet? Scrub it with a pumice stone and add in some toilet magnets to keep the stains from returning

  • Mildew in the shower? Get some mildew cleaner and scrub with a magic eraser.

  • Dirty Grout? Dip a toothbrush in diluted bleach or use a grout pen to whiten it back up

  • How is the bathtub? Everyone will look and be creeped out if it is dirty-- get it clean!

  • Flooring. If you really want your house to inspire awe think about upgrading your flooring-- wood floors are a big selling feature and will be able to boost the sales price on your home.
